School Leaver / 16 - 18 yr Old Vocational CoursesIf you have the goal of working within the healthcare industry and are an ambitious and dedicated individual, this two-year, technical study programme is the ideal course for you.
On the the first year of the course your studies will focus on the core components of the health and science sectors, including modules such as:
You will be required to complete the supporting healthcare component and the occupational specialism in year two, which is called "Supporting the Adult Nursing team".
The course provides a mixture of technical knowledge and clinical skills specific to nursing and a work placement of at least 45 days in your chosen occupation. On completion of the course you will be able to choose between moving into a skilled occupation or further study in nursing and health, for example, a higher or degree level apprenticeship, or higher-level technical study, including higher education.
A big part of your study will be to complete relevant industry-based work placement. Throughout the course, you'll be required to complete a minimum of 45 days (315 hours) work placement. You'll also get the opportunity to show us what you've learned and demonstrate your abilities during numerous observations through the course. Work placement is a great opportunity to get your feet wet in your chosen specialism and help confirm that this is the career you want to do!

Core Knowledge and understanding in health and science: the range of job roles and organisations in the health and care sector, providing person-centred care, health and wellbeing, science concepts (anatomy and physiology, diseases and disorders), health and safety regulations in the healthcare sector, infection prevention and control in health specific settings, managing personal information
Occupational specialist knowledge and skills: An introduction to routine clinical practice, moving and handling, the equipment used in clinical tasks, the role of carers in supporting individuals with daily living, skin conditions
Project management skills: research and problem solving, working with others, communication, evaluation
Practical skills in supporting adult nursing: clinical skills, taking weight, height, temperature, blood pressure measurements, using clinical equipment, monitoring diet,
English, maths and digital skills relevant to the health sector
Students will be assessed using a variety of methods. Year 1 core components will be assessed with written exams, 2 and a half hours for health and 2 and a half hours for science. There will also be an employer set project, where students are set of tasks over a 2-week window. This assessment window equates to 16 and a half hours, and the tasks include conducting research; a written report; a discussion; peer feedback, and a presentation. Supporting healthcare and supporting the adult nursing team will be assessed using assignments and practical synoptic assessments.
