Positive psychology is an applied approach to mental health and wellbeing, aimed at maximising our individual strengths and skills in order to thrive as part of the communities in which we live, work, and play! This course assumes no prior knowledge.
The course will introduce the six building blocks (PERMAH) and three types of happiness, identified by psychologist Martin Seligman (2012 and 2016), as fundamental to a positive, individualised approach to life.
- Positive emotions are important for resilience and wellbeing.
- Engagement occurs when we are focused on using our skills and strengths.
- Relationships give us a purpose that is bigger than ourselves.
Meaning, or our chosen purpose in life, is fundamental to a positive outlook.
- Accomplishments and working towards our individual aspirational goals.
- Health - movement to boost mood; diet to fuel our bodies; restorative sleep.
Happiness or individualised positivity that can be cultivated, according to Seligman:
- The Pleasant Life
- The Good Life
- The Meaningful Life
