Emily returned to learning to study Access to Higher Education in Veterinary Science. Emily studied A-levels in Biology, Chemistry and French. She then took a gap year.
Returning to education for Emily was all about getting back into the routine of learning. As she had only been out of education for a year, the transition was not too difficult but rearranging her work-life and education was a challenge. Emily said, “It does take a while adjusting to being back in education and it can be challenging balancing work and college. However, I have personally enjoyed having the structure in my week and I have now created a routine that works for me. As everyone works differently, it is best to find out what works best for the individual. I would recommend having a daily planner and creating to-do lists the night before, so that you can keep on top of your work and time manage yourself according to your daily schedules.”
Biology and anatomy are areas that Emily particularly enjoys, so this area of the course has been exceptionally enjoyable. Although Emily studied A-level Chemistry, she has learnt new terminology and concepts throughout the course that have been interesting.
Emily applied to study at CWA as it was close to home and allowed her to save money for when she attends university. The classes are small, so there is more one-to-one support readily available. Emily also added, “The facilities at the college are great. Social areas are clean and a lovely place to relax between lectures. The equine unit is well maintained and as an individual who rides, I am happy with the conditions. The lecturers all have different learning styles, which makes a day at college interesting and more varied. Lecturers are always involving student activities that allow the cohort to get to know one another and work with each other. The college itself values students’ opinions and staff often give out feedback forms to help improve the college and the course.”
Upon completion of this course, Emily plans to attend university and study veterinary medicine. Students receive support to prepare them for vet school interviews, which Emily found reassuring. She said, “Although it was hard adjusting at first, the course has been good, and I have met some great like-minded people.”
