Students and staff from the College of West Anglia’s Cambridge campus laced up their walking shoes for each group to walk a mile around the college grounds, taking part in the One College Walking event on Wednesday 22nd October, a college wide initiative in support of the charity, PAPYRUS and its awareness of preventing youth suicide.
This fundraiser was done in conjunction with the One College Walking event that took place on the same day, where members of the CWA community walked from Downham Market campus to CWA’s Sports campus, which is based at Lynnsport. The CWA community’s collective efforts across all campuses ended up raising £2,828 for PAPYRUS, with donations contributing towards suicide prevention training and support services for young people nationwide.
At Cambridge, students from across departments came together to walk around the campus to promote awareness of the charity and the support that it provides. They were sent on their way and serenaded by bagpipes by Stephen Jones, Deputy Principal at Cambridge Regional College, creating an inspiring and memorable send-off as they stepped out in support.
Equine Student, Kieran said “Raising money for a good cause was the reason I wanted to get involved and take part in the walk. I really enjoyed walking around our campus, being with people and socialising in a different context. Fresh air helps with increasing energy and creating headspace. The event was great fun. I’d like to do something like this again.”
The One College Walking initiative builds on CWA’s ongoing commitment to mental health awareness and wellbeing, encouraging students to support each other, open about mental health challenges and to know that support is there.
