Students at both the College of West Anglia and the University Centre West Anglia recently had the opportunity to explore career pathways into teaching at a dedicated in-person information event focused on Early Years, Primary and Secondary teacher training.
The session welcomed Ann Wilkson and Sarah McGill from Cambridge Training Schools Network (CTSN) SCITT, who spoke directly to degree-level students and Level 3 students about routes into the profession, the application process, and the benefits of school-based teacher training.
Designed to support students considering a career in education, the event provided valuable insight into postgraduate education and postgraduate teacher training options across Early Years, Primary, and Secondary phases. Students were able to ask questions about placements, funding, career progression and what to expect from life in the classroom.
Speaking at the event, Ann Wilkson from CTSN SCITT said, “It’s really productive to have an opportunity like this to come and speak to students. Once they have finished their undergraduate degree, if they have the ambition to become a teacher, whether it be early years, secondary or primary, we can offer links to QTS and PGCE. Our talk today highlighted that there is a path beyond their undergraduate career at UcWA, as there is a real shortage of teachers in the East of England.”
Kathryn Le Serve, Course Director of Early Years and Primary Education at UcWA, said, “It was extremely beneficial to have two representatives from this teacher training provider come and talk to our students. They were able to provide information on the opportunities they can offer for primary teacher training, near to where the students live.”
The event forms part of both the College’s and the University's ongoing commitment to supporting progression opportunities for degree students, ensuring they are equipped with clear, accessible routes into professional careers
